Discretionary Retail Sales

Sold-at-the-Top has posted an analysis of retail sales data at Seeking Alpha that includes this chart, showing the year-over-year change in discretionary retail sales from 1992 through mid 2009.  During July 2009, discretionary retail sales including home furnishings, home garden and building materials, consumer electronics and department store sales were 12.29% less than July 2008.  Adjusted for inflation, the real decline in discretionary retail sales since July 2008 was 10.59%.  So far, discretionary retail sales have yet to show signs of much of a recovery.
